Dazu kommen Lebensmittel, die bei der Ernte, Produktion, im Handel und in der Gastronomie vernichtet werden. Weltweit landet sogar etwa ein Drittel aller produzierten Nahrungsmittel im Abfall. Gleichzeitig leiden etwa 793 Millionen Menschen weltweit an Hunger. Durch das Wegwerfen von Lebensmitteln werden gleichzeitig auch Energie, Wasser und andere Rohstoffen in der Kette vom Anbau bis zum Handel verschwendet. Ein Ansatz, der der Lebensmittelverschwendung entgegenwirken soll, ist Foodsharing. Diese Arbeit stellt das Prinzip, die Struktur und die Funktionsweise dieser Organisation vor. Unter dem Motto "Teile Lebensmittel, anstatt sie wegzuwerfen!" versuchen die Mitglieder von Foodsharing der Vergeudung von Essen gemeinsam etwas entgegenzusetzen. Auf der Online-Plattform von Foodsharing geben Privathaushalte und Lebensmittelbetriebe überschüssiges, noch genie bares Essen kostenlos an andere weiter, anstatt es wegzuwerfen. Bei näherer Betrachtung zeigt sich, dass dieses Kollektiv nicht nur Nahrungsmittelabfälle reduzieren will. Eine weitere Zielsetzung ist, die Gesellschaft wieder für einen achtsamen, bewussteren Umgang mit Nahrung zu sensibilisieren. Die Initiative stellt demnach ein Gegenkonzept zur Überfluss- und Wegwerfgesellschaft dar.
