Folgende Frage steht dabei im Mittelpunkt: Bezeugt die rezente Popularität des erotischen Sadomasochismus die Insistenz menschlicher Natur - oder gerade deren kulturelle Wandelbarkeit? Sexuell motivierte sadomasochistische'Praktiken stellten in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ein beliebtes Sujet in Literatur, Film und Zeitschriften da; man denke etwa an die einhundert Millionen Mal verkaufte Romantrilogie "Shades of Grey" die überdies verfilmt und von einem Millionenpublikum gesehen wurde. Langsam weicht das abgenudelte Klischee der toughen, selbstbewussten Domina, dem Bewusstsein, dass sich unter sadomasochistischer Sexualität eine äu erst heterogene und komplexe Thematik verbirgt. In ihrem bekannten Werk "Die Masken der Sexualität" bezieht Camille Paglia die Vokabel Sadomasochismus sowohl auf entsprechende erotische Praktiken als auch auf das in jeder denkbaren Gesellschaft vorhandene Potenzial an Aggression und Brutalität. Der wesentliche Zug des Menschen Natur sei die Sexualität. Und hier kommen Aggression und Gewalt ins Spiel: als eine ursprüngliche Triebenergie sei Sexualität ohne Aggression nicht zu haben. Sadomasochistische Praktiken seien schlicht Ausdruck der durch keine kulturellen Grenzen eingehegten 'Natur'. Bereits die im Rahmen antiker Fruchtbarkeitskulte üblichen drastischen Prozeduren hätten das prekäre Potenzial menschlicher Sexualität thematisiert und demonstriert. Welche Rolle spielt mit Blick auf den Sadomasochismus das Christentum?
