Die Frage nach dem Leid in der Welt ist der Stachel im Fleisch der Theologie, des Glaubens an einen guten und allmächtigen Gott, denn es stellt beides in Frage. Die vorliegende Arbeit will zeigen, dass unser Bild von einem allgütigen und allmächtigen Gott sich sehr wohl mit der Existenz von Leid in der Welt verträgt. Dabei wird auch ein geschichtlicher Abriss des Theodizee-Problems von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart dargestellt. Als am zweiten Weihnachtsfeiertag 2004 das Unglück über Indonesien, Thailand und andere Länder Südostasiens in Gestalt eines gewaltigen Tsunamis hereinbricht, kommt die Frage auf: Wie kann Gott zulassen, dass Hundertausende sterben, Millionen obdachlos und ganze Städte ausradiert werden? Diese Katastrophe erinnert an das gewaltige Erdbeben in Lissabon 1755, das schon den Kinderglauben von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Frage stellte:, Gott, der Schöpfer und Erhalter Himmels und der Erden, den ihm die Erklärung des ersten Glaubens-Artikels so weise und gnädig vorstellte, hatte sich, indem er die Gerechten mit den Ungerechten gleichem Verderben preisgab, keineswegs väterlich bewiesen." Doch es ist nicht die Allmacht Gottes, die hier eine Grenze findet, sondern unsere Vorstellungen von dieser. Die Allmacht Gottes besteht nämlich nicht darin, dass er alles Schlechte und alle Gefahren, also das Leiden von uns fern hält. Die folgende Arbeit soll zeigen, dass Gott dem Menschen nichts Böses will, sondern sich in Liebe dem Menschen zuwendet. Diese Liebe drückt sich in der Freiheit aus, die Gott dem Menschen lässt, sich für oder gegen ihn zu entscheiden.
