Das kulturelle Leben in Berlin um 1800 ist - neben den Institutionen der Bildung, Kunst und Wissenschaft - geprägt durch gelehrte und literarische Vereinigungen, Salons und einen umfänglichen privaten Vorlesungsbetrieb, der sich über alle Zweige der Wissenschaften erstreckt. Mit seiner 1796 erfolgten Berufung zum reformierten Prediger an der Charité tritt der Theologe und Philosoph Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768-1834) in diese Welt ein, in der er bald heimisch und die ihm zum Lebenselement wird. Hier befreundet er sich u.a. mit Friedrich Schlegel, ist Gast im Salon der Henriette Herz und begründet die lebenslängliche Freundschaft mit dem Verleger Georg Andreas Reimer. Mit seinem anonym publizierten Versuch einer Theorie des geselligen Betragens (1799) wird Schleiermacher zum Theoretiker des geselligen Lebens in Berlin, das für ihn als selbstzweckhafte Sphäre neben dem Geschäftsleben steht und in besonderer Weise durch die Frauen geprägt ist. Wissenschaft und Geselligkeit sind somit die Pole des Schleiermacherschen Lebens in Berlin, wobei die Wissenschaft nicht nur das "Symphilosophieren" im frühromantischen Freundeskreis umfasst, sondern auch die Teilnahme etwa an den chemischen Vorlesungen Klaproths und nicht zuletzt die theologische Reflexion seiner Tätigkeit als Charitéprediger. - Mit Schleiermachers Berufung auf eine Hofpredigerstelle in Stolp 1802 endet dieser Lebensabschnitt.
Der Band, der aus einem Symposion an der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften hervorgegangen ist, vermittelt ein Bild dieses Lebens zwischen Wissenschaft und Geselligkeit auf der Basis von Quellen, die durch die Kritische Schleiermacher-Gesamtausgabe neu erschlossen wurden.
