Der Roman beginnt mit einer dramatischen Begegnung zwischen hungrigen Wölfen und Menschen mit Schlittenhunden. Es herrscht eine schlimme Hungersnot, und das Rudel Wölfe verfolgt die Menschen und ihre Hunde, um an Nahrung zu kommen. Wolfsbluts Mutter Kische spielt hierbei eine wichtige Rolle; denn sie ist nur zur Hälfte ein Wolf. In dieser Zeit lernt sie Wolfsbluts Vater kennen, einen reinrassigen Wolf. Im nächsten Teil des Romans werden Wolfsbluts erste Lebensmonate erzählt: wie er mit seiner Mutter in ein Indianerlager kommt und dort seine Jugend verbringt. Er wird bald von seiner Mutter getrennt und streitet sich viel mit den anderen Hunden der Indianer. Für die Indianer stellt sich Wolfsblut als besonders guter Schlittenhund heraus. Später wird er als Leithund eingesetzt und wird von den anderen Hunden gehasst da er eine besondere Behandlung bekommt. Er muss den Hunden nach Abnahme des Zuggeschirrs täglich seine Kraft beweisen... Jack London (1876-1916) war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller und Journalist. Er erlangte vor allem Bekanntheit durch seine Abenteuerromane Ruf der Wildnis und Wolfsblut sowie durch den mehrfach verfilmten Abenteuerroman Der Seewolf und den autobiographisch beeinflussten Roman Martin Eden.

Jack London (1876-1916) ist ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, der durch seine Abenteuerromane Weltruhm erlangte. In armlichen Verhaltnissen aufgewachsen, wird das Leben fur ihn selbst zum Abenteuer. Er schlagt sich als Fabrikarbeiter, Austernpirat, Landstreicher und Seemann durch, holt das Abitur nach, beginnt zu studieren, arbeitet als Journalist und begibt sich als Goldsucher nach Alaska. Seine Romane spielen zumeist im Spannungsfeld zwischen Wildnis, roher menschlicher Natur und Kultur. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehoren die Romane Wolfsblut, Ruf der Wildnis, Lockruf des Goldes und Der Seewolf.
