Durch die Beschreibungen werden Prozesse transparenter und es kann versucht werden, sie zu optimieren und standardisieren. Das Business Process (Re- )Engineering versucht, diese Ideen umzusetzen. Ein Workflow beschreibt dabei die Aktivitäten von Geschäftsvorfällen auf der konzeptuellen Ebene, dies ist die Basis für das Optimieren und analysieren. Dabei haben sich verschiedene Systeme und Techniken entwickelt, die sowohl in Produktivbetrieb die einzelnen Arbeitsprozesse unterstützen, als auch bei der Planung und der Optimierung von diesen Prozessen helfen. Diese Arbeit soll einen speziellen Aspekt von Arbeitsprozessen untersuchen, nämlich immer wiederkehrende Muster in den Prozessen, die in Standards zur Modellierung als auch in Softwareprodukten abgebildet werden können: die sogenannten Workflow Patterns.
