About The Book

What is the role of literature in our global landscape today? How do local authors respond to the growing worldwide power of English and the persisting effects of the colonial systems that paved the way for globalization today? These questions have often been approached very differently by postcolonialists and by students of world literature, but over the past two decades, a developing dialogue between these divergent approaches has produced robust scholarship and sometimes fractious debate, as issues of language, politics, and cultural difference have come to the fore. Drawing on a wide variety of cases, from medieval Wales to contemporary Syria and Australia, and on works written in Arabic, Basque, English, Hindi, and more, this collection explores the mutual illumination that can be gained through the interaction of postcolonial and world literary perspectives.

About The Author

Tiwari, Bhavya: - Bhavya Tiwari received her MA in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University (2008) and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin (2014). She is Assistant Professor at the University of Houston, and is the author of Beyond English: World Literature and India (Bloomsbury, 2021), and of essays in Interventions, Comparative Literature Studies, Comparative Literature and Culture, and elsewhere.

David Damrosch received his Ph.D. at Yale (1980) and is Ernest Bernbaum Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University and founder of the Institute for World Literature. His books include What Is World Literature? (Princeton University Press, 2003), Comparing the Literatures: Literary Studies in a Global Age (Princeton University Press, 2020), and Around the World in 80 Books (Penguin Press, 2021), and he is editor and translator of Georges Ngal's Giambatista Viko, or the Rape of African Discourse (2022).
