Zunächst wird im Allgemeinen die Morphologie beschrieben, um den Bereich der Wortbildung zu kontextualisieren. Denn so Geckeler: "Von den Produkten her gehört die Wortbildung zur Lexik, von den Verfahren her teilweise zur Morphologie. Weithin ist aber heute die von vielen vertretene Auffassung akzeptiert, dass die Wortbildung ein eigenständiger Bereich der Sprache neben Morphologie (als Formenlehre), Grammatik (als Funktionslehre der Morpheme, vorwiegend der Flexionsmorpheme) und Syntax (als Satzlehre) ist, die ihre Produkte der Lexik zur Verfügung stellt." So müssen auch die Nachbardisziplinen Grammatik und Syntax in diesem Zusammenhang kurz betrachtet werden, da diese eng miteinander verbunden und nicht autonom sind. Anschlie end sollen die einzelnen Wortbildungsverfahren vorgestellt werden. Hierbei werden zuerst die Komposition und dann die verschiedenen Derivationsverfahren wie Präfigierung, Suffigierung und Parasynthese sowie die Wortkürzungen und die Konversion vorgestellt.
