Chien-Shiung Wu designed and executed the experiment that disproved one of the fundamental laws of physics. The Nobel Prize went to the two male theorists whose prediction she proved. Vera Rubin spent decades building the observational foundation of dark matter cosmology and died in 2016 without the prize every physicist in her field agreed she deserved. Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered pulsars as a PhD student in 1967. Her supervisor collected the Nobel eight years later. Ida Noddack proposed nuclear fission in 1934 - four years before the physics community caught up with her - and was publicly ignored.

These are not isolated cases. They are instances of a pattern.

The historian of science Margaret Rossiter named it the Matilda effect: the systematic tendency of scientific institutions to undervalue women's contributions, to attribute their discoveries to male colleagues and supervisors, and to exclude them from the formal recognition that the scale of their work demands. Written Out documents twelve of the most significant and most thoroughly documented cases in the history of science - from Maud Menten, whose experimental work produced the equation that runs modern biochemistry, to Emmy Noether, whose theorem underlies every conservation law in physics, to Eunice Newton Foote, who identified the greenhouse effect in 1856, three years before the male physicist credited with the discovery.

Each chapter tells the full story: what the woman discovered, how the credit was transferred, and what the historical record now shows. Together, the twelve cases build an argument that is both precise and damning - that the history of science as it is usually told is a history from which the most significant women have been systematically removed.
