In den Jahren zwischen 1933 und 1938 entstand in Deutschland eine vielf�ltige und vom nationalsozialistischen Regime geduldete j�dische Literatur. Bei der Analyse dieser bisher nicht hinreichend wahrgenommenen Belletristik konzentriert sich die Untersuchung auf die erz�hlende Literatur, die unter dem Eindruck der gescheiterten Emanzipation und einer fortschreitenden Ausgrenzung und Repression als Reflexionsmedium der historischen Situation fungierte. Die von Juden geschriebene und an Juden adressierte Erz�hlliteratur der Zeit diente der Selbstvergewisserung und der Positionsbestimmung und bot sich dar�berhinaus nicht selten als Handlungsanleitung an. Die Texte werden daher sowohl in einer ausf�hrlichen �bersicht als auch in exemplarischen Analysen - der Werke von Gerson Stern, Rudolf Frank und Jacob Picard - als historische Dokumente ernstgenommen, d.h. die Besonderheiten ihrer �sthetischen Verfahren und Artikulationsm�glichkeiten werden auf der Folie ihres zeitgeschichtlichen Kontextes eingehend untersucht. Dadurch wird eine Literatur sichtbar, die einerseits die nicht zu untersch�tzende Bandbreite der innerj�dischen Diskussion widerspiegelt und andererseits den entw�rdigenden Zumutungen ihrer nichtj�dischen Umwelt widerspricht. Angesichts der zunehmend prek�rer werdenden Situation geh�rte dieser literarisch vermittelte Widerspruch zu den wenigen Mitteln, mit deren Hilfe die Juden im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland ihre W�rde behaupten konnten.
