You Are the One is a heartfelt and empowering children's book that invites young readers and their families into a journey of empathy, inclusion, and hope. Created by Di Gee, a lifelong educator, artist, and songwriter, this story was written to accompany her original Di Gee Dreaming song-a gentle anthem of kindness and cultural unity.
This inspiring picture book encourages children to explore important values: standing up against bullying, embracing diversity, and choosing compassion, even in the face of difficulty. Through the eyes of a child, readers witness how simple acts of love and understanding can transform relationships and build bridges between communities.
More than a traditional storybook, You Are the One serves as a teaching tool for parents, educators, and carers seeking to nurture empathy and emotional intelligence in children. It's designed to be read aloud and shared. The book opens conversations about fairness, difference, friendship, and the courage to choose kindness.
At the end of the story, readers are invited to experience the song that inspired the book. A QR code links to a beautifully produced animated version of The Dreaming Song, creating a multi-sensory learning experience that allows children to connect emotionally with the story's message through music.
Ideal for primary-aged children, the text is written in a clear and engaging style. Younger children, such as toddlers and preschoolers, will also connect with the lyrical nature of the storytelling. For these readers, parents can simply read the lyrics aloud and share the song together, using it as a calming bedtime or group listening activity.
You Are the One is more than a book-it's a movement for unity. It delivers a timely and compassionate message: that every child, no matter who they are or where they come from, has the power to shape a kinder world. Perfect for schools, libraries, families, and community groups, it is a valuable resource for teaching the next generation how to live with heart, courage, and respect for all.
Gee, Di M.: - Dianna Gee is an Australian artist, songwriter, and retired children's music teacher with Dutch heritage. Her work is driven by a deep belief in the healing power of creativity, and a lifelong commitment to inclusion, cultural understanding, and empowering children through story and song. Her debut book, You Are the One, was inspired by a deeply personal response to racism and bullying, and the need to create a message of love, kindness, and unity for young readers. The accompanying Dreaming Song-written in 2016-has since taken on a life of its own, with many encouraging Dianna to bring it into the world as a tool for connection, healing, and harmony.Over the years, Dianna has collaborated with Aboriginal artists, Elders, and musicians to support arts-led healing initiatives. In 2023, she secured funding to deliver a community songwriting workshop through the Nala Boodja Eco Clan Aboriginal Corporation at the Nannup Music Festival. This built on her earlier involvement in the 2022 Sorry Water Ceremony "Winyarn Beela," which further affirmed her commitment to cultural truth-telling and reconciliation.A long-time advocate for disability awareness and social inclusion, Dianna previously launched accessible arts initiatives and helped establish the first disability and inclusion agency in Margaret River in 2010 through Life Without Barriers. Now semi-retired, Dianna continues to volunteer, create, and deliver community projects. Her current focus is on touring regional schools across Australia with You Are the One and The Dreaming Song, using storytelling, music, and animation to spark conversations around empathy, identity, and hope.
