This is a book for those who are at times puzzled or put off by the Old Testament because of simply not knowing where to begin. The book provides both introduction and overview, exploring the meaning and message of each book for readers of today.

The book begins with the sometimes contentious question of why (and whether) the Old Testament is "old,"and then moves into introductions to each of its major sections.

Individual overviews and discussions of each book of the Old Testament are provided along with helpful maps, tables and charts as well as complete indexes of subject matter, biblical texts cited, and Hebrew words noted in the discussion.

The book is written for students of the Bible, whether members of church congregations, pastors, or students in college or seminary. No knowledge of Hebrew is assumed or required; but, for those who have studied that language, the book offers additional insights based on the Hebrew text.

The first edition of the book was published for classroom use by the author, who taught Old Testament and Hebrew in seminary for 13 years. This second edition has been revised with the audience described above in mind.

James C. Bangsund is on the pastoral staff of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in San Jose, California. He received his Ph.D. from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and for 13 years taught Hebrew and Old Testament at Makumira University College in Tanzania, East Africa. He has also published "Reading Biblical Hebrew," a textbook for use both by individuals as well as in a classroom situation. (The book will soon be republished as "You Can Read Biblical Hebrew.") He and his wife, who is also a pastor, have three adult children.
