Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 2,0, Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der Tod ereilte in der Zeit der Vormoderne nicht nur "die Alten", sondern er war für junge wie alte Menschen allgegenwärtig und konnte unerwartet eintreffen. Der grö ere Teil der Menschen verstarb, bedingt durch Krankheiten, Hungersnöte, Kriege etc. und vor allem im Kindesalter, bereits vor dem hohen Alter. Der während der Frühen Neuzeit populäre Spruch "Mitten im Leben sind wir vom Tod umgeben" bezeugt diese Gegebenheit. Trotzdem wurde das Alter seit jeher, vor allem aufgrund des körperlichen Verfalls alter Menschen, der von allen Alterssymptomen am deutlichsten nach au en sichtbar ist, als letzte Lebensstufe und als Vorstufe des Todes sowohl positiv als auch negativ wahrgenommen: "Einerseits wurde Altern mit körperlichem und geistigem Zerfall, Gebrechlichkeit und Nähe zum Tod assoziiert, und im Vergleich zum positiven Bild der Jugend wurde das Alter auch früher meist negativ bewertet. Andererseits wurde Alter mit Erfahrung und geistiger, spiritueller Entwicklung (Weisheit) in Verbindung gebracht." Je nachdem, ob der Tod als positives oder negatives Ereignis wahrgenommen wurde, konnte auch das Alter als vorheriger Lebensabschnitt als "Erfolgs- oder als Verfallsgeschichte"2 gedeutet werden. In der vorliegenden Hausarbeit wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Deutungen und Vorstellungen für das Alter in Zusammenhang mit der Endlichkeit und dem Tod in der Vormoderne aufgegriffen, weiterentwickelt und verändert wurden und welche geschlechtsspezifischen Stereotypen alten Menschen zugeschrieben wurden. Zur Beantwortung der Fragestellung werden zunächst allgemeine Vorstellungen über Alter und Tod in der Frühen Neuzeit vorgestellt. In den darauf folgenden Kapiteln werden positive und negative Darstellungen des Alters in Zusammenhang mit dem Tod erläutert.
