Im Verlauf des 11. Jahrhunderts fordert das Papsttum zunehmend eine universale Zuständigkeit für jeden Christen. Wenn auch dieses Programm nicht vollständig realisiert wurde, so ist es doch das erfolgreichste Beispiel herrschaftlicher Raumerfassung im mittelalterlichen Europa.

Bis an die Peripherie des Okzidents und auch darüber hinaus bildeten sich geordnete Strukturen der Kommunikation und der Kontaktaufnahme. Die Ausbreitung neuer Rechtsnormen, die Durchsetzung der päpstlichen Delegationsgerichtsbarkeit, die Reformanstö e durch Synoden und Päpste, das Wirken von Legaten und anderen päpstlichen Beauftragten und die politischen Aktivitäten der Päpste waren Instrumente der raumerfassenden Wirkung. Die zentralisierenden Instanzen traten indes in Konkurrenz zur Ausbildung von Netzwerken, so dass Hierarchie durch sich selbst organisierende Beziehungsmuster teils gefestigt, teils ergänzt, teils aber auch geschwächt wurde. Störungen der Kommunikation, die durch nationale Antagonismen und durch politische Rivalitäten hervorgerufen wurden, bedrohten die Einheit. Die Probleme verschärften sich, als am Ende des Mittelalters durch die erfolgreiche Etablierung einer Gegenkirche in Böhmen die Einheit grundsätzlich in Frage gestellt wurde.

Der Sammelband behandelt diese Thematik in mehreren Beiträgen, wobei vor allem die Organisation der päpstlichen Gewalt, die rechtlichen Verfahren und die Kommunikationswege religiöser Vorstellungen untersucht werden. Basierend auf einem kommunikationshistorischen Ansatz untersuchen die Beiträge Wege und Barrieren des Informationsaustausches in einer Kirche, die sich als universale Instanz sah und diesen Anspruch mühevoll durchzusetzen versuchte.
