Die Berliner Diplomaten legten die Wettbewerbsregeln fest, nach denen sich die Gro m chte bei der Suche nach Kolonien richten sollten. Die Theorie der effektiven Besetzung, die durch Beweise gebellt wurde, wurde angewendet. Die europ ischen L nder sandten Agenten aus, um sogenannte Schutzvertr ge mit den F hrern afrikanischer Gesellschaften, Staaten, K nigreiche, dezentraler Gesellschaften und Reiche zu unterzeichnen. Die unterschiedliche Auslegung dieser Vertr ge durch die Streitkr fte f hrte h ufig zu Konflikten zwischen beiden Parteien und schlie lich zu milit rischen Begegnungen. F r die Europ er bedeuteten diese Vertr ge, dass die Afrikaner ihre Souver nit t an die europ ischen M chte abgetreten hatten. F r die Afrikaner waren die Vertr ge lediglich diplomatische und kommerzielle Freundschaftsvertr ge. Nachdem afrikanische Herrscher festgestellt hatten, dass sie tats chlich betrogen worden waren und die europ ischen M chte nun politische Autorit t in ihrem Land durchsetzen und aus ben wollten, organisierten sie sich milit risch, um der Beschlagnahme ihres Landes und der Auferlegung kolonialer Herrschaft zu widerstehen.
