Technische ontwikkel- gen hebben bijvoorbeeld veel betere toepassingen opgeleverd voor beeldv- mende diagnostiek. Andere technologie maakt nauwkeurig neurochirurgisch ingrijpen mogelijk. Er is veel meer aandacht gekomen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek en de resultaten daarvan komen bijna wekelijks in de publiciteit. Er is een veel beter inzicht ontstaan in de werking van de hersenen, bijvo- beeld op het gebied van plasticiteit en cognitie. Bestaande behandelingen zijn sterk verbeterd en nieuwe behandelvormen zijn mogelijk geworden. Trombolyse bijvoorbeeld biedt nu de mogelijkheid om een herseninfarct te behandelen, waarbij snelheid van handelen uitermate belangrijk is gew- den, terwijl men voorheen niet veel meer kon doen dan afwachten. Al deze ontwikkelingen hebben geleid tot veel medisch-technische ver- deringen binnen de medische specialismen neurologie en neurochirurgie. In het kielzog daarvan is ook de ontwikkeling van het vakgebied van de neuroverpleegkundige buitengewoon krachtig geweest. Systematisch wet- schappelijk onderzoek heeft grote implicaties gehad voor de zorgverlening door de neuroverpleegkundige, zoals de signalering van en omgang met cognitieve problematiek en revalidatie bij CVA. Er zijn functiepro? elen en competentiepro? elen ontwikkeld die het werk van de neuroverpleegkundige in kaart brengen en beter inzichtelijk maken. Er zijn voor diverse ziek- beelden verpleegkundige nazorgpoli's ontstaan, bijvoorbeeld voor de ziekte van Parkinson en multipele sclerose, en binnen de neurologie werken nu verpleegkundig specialisten.
