September haben sich viele Wissenschaftler die Frage, welche Beziehung zwischen Terrorismus und insbesondere Selbstmordterrorismus und Religion besteht, gestellt. Da Selbstmordterrorismus sowohl bei religiösen als auch säkularen Terrorgruppen als Taktik genutzt wird, kann nicht davon ausgegangen werden, dass Selbstmordterrorismus ein Produkt der Hingabe zu spezifischen religiösen Überzeugungen ist. Anstatt dessen stelle ich in der vorliegenden Arbeit jedoch die These auf, dass die Hingabe zum Kollektiv ein entscheidendes Moment für Handlungen wie Selbstmordterrorismus ist, und dass diese Hingabe durch kollektive Rituale (ob nun religiöser oder säkularer Natur) bestärkt und manifestiert werden. Gemeinschaftliche religiöse Rituale haben einen verbindenden Charakter (vgl. Durkheim 1981), die hilft kollektive Handlungsprobleme zu überwinden und die Ingroupkooperation zu steigern (vgl. Ginges 2009, 1). Terroristen benutzen aufwendige Rituale um Emotionen mit geheiligten Symbolen zu verbinden und Gruppenzugehörigkeit zu symbolisieren. Diese geheiligten Symbole sind emotional evokativ und in ihrer Motivation kraftvoll. Sie unterstützen die Ingroupsolidarität, das Vertauen und die Kooperation innerhalb dieser. Religiöse Glaubenssätze, einschlie lich der versprochenen Belohnungen im Jenseits, dienen weiterhin dazu die Kooperation zu fördern, indem sie den wahrgenommenen Kosten von Handlungen wie Selbstmordterrorismus ändern. Um der Antwort auf die Frage welche Rolle Rituale i n Bezug auf Terrorismus im Allgemeinen und Selbstmordterrorismus im Besonderen, wende ich mich im 1. Kapitel zunächst kurz einer These von Yoeli und Pratos (2008) zu, die in ihrem Aufsatz "Terrorism is the Ritual Abuse of the Twenty-first Century" Terrorismus als einen Kult definieren.
